That time of year is almost upon us; your browser starts filling up with online shopping tabs, you’re crossing your fingers you’ll back a winner in the office sweep and it’s time to forget about last year’s hangover and get ready to do it all over again.
We are OFF & RACING this Spring racing season with our 2019 Melbourne Cup event, set amongst our leafy oasis in the heart of Valley, the backyard is set to be filled with fascinators and cuff links as attendees arrive to back a winner in style.
Speaking of style… we recently caught up with Rachael from Champagne Sil Vous Plait to chat all things fashion this racing season. The do’s, the don’ts and Rachael’s top tips on beating the heat to look cool and stay cool this Melbourne Cup.
Read on for her style tips and also how you could WIN a $500 shopping spree at either Sass & Bide or MJ Bale thanks to Seppelt Wines.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOP TRENDS FOR THIS YEAR’S RACING SEASON?
There are a few key trends that will stand out this racing season, from wearable millinery to barettes/clips and bold blocked colours to neutral modern bohemian styles, there’s something for everyone! This is the event to make the most of creative headwear, bold colours, textures and even print clashing (if done well).
WHAT COLOURS WILL WE BE SEEING A LOT OF THIS YEAR?
Red, Pink, Green (hopefully together), navy and yellow. Traditionally Derby Day is black and/or white, Melbourne Cup Day is bold colours and textures, and Crown Oaks Day (Ladies Day) is neutrals and florals. However, if you’re only headed to Melbourne Cup Day itself then you can wear monochrome or feminine colours/prints as well.
WHAT ABOUT HEADWEAR – WHAT’S IN THIS YEAR? ANY TIPS FOR THOSE WARY OF FASCINATORS?
Wearable millinery will be big this year, thanks to the Royals, however if you’re not entering Fashions On The Field there’s no need to wear a large or complicated fascinator or hat (unless you want to of course). Clips and Barrets are still a huge trend this season and are perfect layered for a subtle yet glam look.
WHAT ABOUT WHAT NOT TO WEAR? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D STEER CLEAR OF?
Melbourne Cup Day is a fun day but also keep in mind the elegance of the event so no midriffs, strapless or mini dresses! I would also steer clear of brand new shoes that you haven’t broken in, jumpsuits that are hard to get in and out of, and showing too much cleavage AND legs.
WHAT MUST-HAVES DO YOU KEEP IN YOUR CLUTCH ON BIG EVENT DAYS LIKE THIS?
The usual pressed powder and lipstick for retouches of course, but I always add a little emergency pack consisting of band-aids, bobby pins, safety pins, extra Hollywood tape (if your outfit requires it) and Panadol. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
WHAT WILL THE BOYS BE WEARING THIS YEAR?
Tonal dressing is a big trend this year, and the men can have us much fun as the ladies by either keeping it classic or mixing it up. Suits in all shades of blue, from navy to pastel, as well as greys and neutrals are the most popular however that doesn’t mean they have to be plain! Check and patterned suits with a print clash shirt or tie are always popular, bonus points for adding a hat too!
